After she retired from the Chicago Board of Education in 1993, Mrs. McLemore continued her work as an educational leader. She proudly served as principal of Salem Christian Academy and the Betty Shabazz International Charter School; she served as, Executive Director of the Illinois Commission on the 50th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of the Education; as the Assistant Director for DePaul University, School of Education -School Achievement Structure (SAS). Presently, she is the Executive Director of O & L Educational Consultants and Services.
Mrs. McLemore proudly volunteered on several educational, social, civic, and medical boards. She is also a charter member of the Dozen Scholarship Association and the Chicago Carrousels, Inc. Other memberships (in brief) are: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Windy City Chapter of the Links, Inc., American Bridge Association,

The Mary Herrick Scholarship Fund is solely supported by private donations from DuSable High School staff, DuSable High School Alumni, Friends of DuSable High School, University Church members, and other individuals and organizations who share the philosophy and the aspirations of the Mary Herrick Scholarship Fund.
She began her career as a teacher in Chicago Public Schools and became Principal of Beasley Academic Center Magnet School located on the South Side of Chicago. During her tenure at Beasley, Mrs. McLemore was chosen as one of the “50 Faces of Hope” by President Bill Clinton during his first campaign for presidency. President Clinton visited Beasley and awards recognized… Beasley is as good as any private school… in the country that he recommends to anybody… and Mrs. McLemore being a brilliant principal on national television.
